—Carl van Vechten". . . with a cat, you stand on much the same footing as you stand with a fine and dignified friend; if you forfeit his respect, the relationship suffers. The cat, it is well to remember, remains the friend of Man because it pleases him to do so, not because he must."

“A person does not change so drastically without a reason.”
Were you brave enough to stand in front of your former co-worker and ask him where was hidden the gentleman he used to be, what have happened to him, why was he showing a sad and pathetic image of the person he once was?
“I kept hoping that he would transform back into the “old” Jim or would do something... anything... to redeem himself. It didn't happen.”
It won’t happen as an act of magic. It may happen, though...
Life has more surprises than I wish it did. It is not uncommon to find someone who enjoyed hunting to had become a follower of Ahimsa. Nor it’s uncommon to see someone who was a fervent communist to become an anarchist. A former member from the Ku Klux Klan can become a strong defender of the black population he once was chasing after. People even change their sex and a man can become a woman. It’s all related to this crazy roller coaster we (humans) call “life”.
People can evolve and, unfortunately, they can also involution.
Was Jim’s involution a product of all those divorces you mentioned? I would rather say the contrary: he went through all of them because he was no longer a gentleman and had lost his self confidence.
I wish you to meet Jim one more time... in 2017. You may get a huge surprise... for good... or for bad...
